Vaska is not a cat's nickname for St. Petersburg residents. This is the short name of the island at the mouth of the Neva River. In ancient times, it was called Hirvasaari in the Baltic-Finnish dialect. And since 1500 it became Vasilyevsky.

It began to be built up from the time of Peter the Great. Now it is one of the oldest and one of the most modern places in the city at the same time. That's the contrast! In the southern part there are 19th-century buildings, and in the east, near the bay itself, there are super-modern new buildings. They were placed on the alluvial part, where there was water 20 years ago.

Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg is also a student part of the city. It is here that the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg State University, the Naval Cadet Corps and the Mining Institute are located.

By the way, Vasilyevsky Street is the narrowest street in the Northern capital, Repin Street. At its widest point, it is not even six meters.

Interesting facts:

The arrow of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, according to Peter's plan, was to become the business and cultural center of the city. She divides Neva into Small and Large. The first stone building that appeared here was the Menshikov Palace, built for Prince Menshikov.

Today, it offers views of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace, the Admiralty and St. Isaac's Cathedral. In the center of the arrow is a beautiful, antique-looking building. This is an exchange.

It was planned that Vasilyevsky Island would be divided into a network of parallel canal streets. And although this idea was later abandoned, the lines remained: the streets in the center are still called an ordinal number and a line.
